ABOUT Sgt. Joshua Rodgers:
U.S. Army Ranger Sgt. Joshua Rodgers was killed in action on April 27, 2017, while conducting combat operations in the Nangarhar Province of Afghanistan in support of the Global War on Terrorism. Josh was a Ranger Team Leader assigned to Company C, 3rd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment at Fort Benning, Ga. While serving in the 75th Ranger Regiment Josh earned several military decorations, but most notable among them are his Combat Infantryman Badge, Purple Heart, and Bronze Star Medal w/Valor.
Growing up Josh was active in local youth sports and Cougar football was an important influence on him. It taught him accountability, leadership, and the impact of positive sportsmanship. The kids learn that every position has a purpose and to execute a play successfully each individual needs to fulfill their responsibility while also working together—skills valuable both on and off the field.
This is only possible through the dedication and support of Cougar coaches. Coaches have a huge impact on a player’s mindset and attitude for the rest of their lives. Participation in Cougar football taught Josh what leadership looks like, how to communicate, how to build relationships, and how to behave and carry himself during times of adversity. Once in high school Josh became part of the NCHS Ironman football program where he was fortunate to be surrounded by more influential coaches and mentors.
Josh was an amazing friend with a big heart and a smile that could light up any room. He exemplified the Army expectation to lead from the front. To become a Ranger Team Lead Josh demonstrated many critical skills, but he was known for the respect he gave others, rare listening skills, and the ability to embrace any task no matter how difficult. Josh knew his purpose in life and died while living out his dream as a member of the elite 75th Ranger Regiment.
The Sgt Joshua Rodgers Cougar Memorial Fund strives to provide financial assistance to young athletes and their families so that they also can benefit from the player/coach relationship and team experiences only a sport like Cougar football can provide.
